Preceded in death by: her husband of 44 years, Thomas Proffitt, and her first husband of 7 years, Gerard Kelty
Survived by: her children: Melissa, Gerard, Jerome, Rachel, Sarah, and Jennifer, Laurie, Brenda, along with 12 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren
Our mother Roberta Proffitt passed away peacefully at home on April 14th at the age of 84. A proud Vermonter, she graduated nursing school at the age of 20 and served as a First Lieutenant in the Air Force, where she met her first husband and had six children. She was widowed at the age of 33, and eventually remarried and then moved back to Vermont, where she fulfilled her dream of opening an antique shop in the barn behind her family home. She was diagnosed with MDS in 2012 and went on to endure hundreds of blood transfusions, countless medications and finally chemotherapy. She did all of this while caring for her disabled husband, running her business, and volunteering in her community. Our mom was a fighter and handled her illness with grace and dignity until the day she died. She was tiny in stature but mighty in spirit, and overcame so many challenges in her long and full life. She was kind, funny and compassionate, and baked one hell of a pie. We will miss her terribly but she will always be with us.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage friends and family to either donate blood or make a monetary contribution to their local blood bank to help other individuals have more time with their loved ones.
