Obituary of Carllyn Elma Toppin

Carllyn Elma (Voehl) Toppin passed away January 24, 2023 at Banner University Hospital in Tucson, AZ. Carllyn was born July 9,1941 in Monrovia, CA.  She was the daughter of Louis Voehl and Alma (Rossow) Voehl from rural Lakefield, MN.

Carllyn graduated from Worthington, MN High School.  She received her RN from Naeve School of Nursing in Albert Lea, MN and later returned to school to earn a Bachelors degree in nursing at Mankato State University in Mankato, MN. Carllyn was still a proud member of the Naeve nurses Alumni Association.

Carllyn was married to John Toppin of Winnebago, MN for 55 wonderful years.  The Toppins lived 18 years in Minnesota, 19 years in Texas(DFW) and 18 in Tucson,AZ.  Their courtship often included summer afternoons at the Minnesota Vikings practices on the Mankato State upper campus.  So their first wedding anniversary present to each other was those Vikings season tickets.

Carllyn's nursing career often centered on care for the disabled and/or aging.  In the 1970s she was a field teacher for Sister Kinney Institute in Minneapolis,MN.  She spent several years at Mala Strana Nursing Home in New Prague, MN doing everything from training nurses aides to serving as Director of Nursing. In Dallas, Carllyn worked for INTRACORP, a subsidiary of CIGNA insurance, helping disabled claimants to get the proper treatment or job opportunities. She extended her career through Home Health and Hospice work in both Texas and Arizona.

Carllyn was a member of St.Marks Methodist Church in Tucson,AZ.

She was survived by her husband John.
