Stuart W. Wells III posted a condolence

Some things you may not know about my brother, Patrick Cushman Wells: "Patrick" was from our Scottish Grandmother, of clan Kirkpatrick. "Cushman" was our mother's side of the family, and in America dates from Thomas Cushman who married Mary Allerton, passenger on the Mayflower, and the last to pass away. "Wells" comes from Thomas Wells, first treasurer of the Connecticut Colony, later Governor and the only person to hold, at separate times, all four of the then top offices in the Colony. We share this heritage, but I do so only by adoption.
Most of my memories of my brother are old ones, as we have lived for many years now in different parts of the country. Even when we both lived in Minnesota, he built houses in Wayzata and Plymouth and I practiced law in St. Paul.
We both played hockey of course - doesn't everybody from Minnesota? We were not normally teammates, and even a few times opponents - he at Middlebury and I at Amherst. But I remember particularly playing alongside him in Blake School Alumni games, forming a line with his friend Jim Lindsay as the center.
More recently we would speak at some length by phone, mostly on birthdays and holidays. We agreed on matters political, but I was rather skeptical about his theories on near death experiences and other secrets of the universe- which he knew in advance, but which in no way deterred his telling me about them, in detail.
We remained true friends even when geographically far apart. Stuart III

Patrick was the very first person in Hollywood to give me a "break," recognize my worth, and champion my cause. I wrote a book and screenplay for him, he introduced me to psychedelic intellectuals Ralph Abraham and Terence McKenna, and he remained a friend, supporter, and mentor to me for the past thirty years.
Patrick's optimism and faith in our collective future was contagious, energizing, and inspirational. I am forever changed for having known him, both practically and spiritually.

Pat and Linda lived on the other side of the country form Stuart and me. By the time they moved back to Minneapolis from California, we had moved to Connecticut. We did talk on the phone from time to time and It was always a pleasure. Pat was always curious and enthusiastic. He was always asking questions, exploring the unknown and writing articles. It seemed he was on a quest. He was irrepressible, one of a kind. I am so sorry Linda, Margie and Crissi. The loss of Patrick is a huge loss.
All my love. Let me know if I can help going forward. Galen

Why does it take an event like death to bring us all together again? Some of us haven't seen each other for a couple decades, yet it seems like we just saw each other weeks ago. We picked up right where we left off.
Being with you Linda, Margie, and Crissi this week was a bitter sweet time together. The days are long but the years are short.
Head stands, hockey sticks, saunas and Abba are just a few of the memories of Patrick that our family still talks about. Chelsea still laughs about Uncle Pat doing head stands in the house. Sam remembers Uncle Pat giving him his first hockey stick for his birthday and shooting tennis balls in the living room. Nikki remembers Uncle Pat singing "Dancing Queen" by Abba at the top of his lungs when he drove the girls home from their home in Plymouth. Mary will never forget the sweet advice that Patrick gave us to have Pet Names for one another before we were married. I know the reason I am such a huge sauna enthusiast is because Patrick introduced me to the sauna at the Fire Cabin many years ago.
You will be sorely missed my friend.
Requiescat in Pace,
Gary

Uncle Pat was always a lot of fun and I loved going to his modern “upside down” house! There was lots of white shag carpeting and great 70’s decor. I enjoyed helping out in the set of his first movie when I was in my teens, as well. We also shared a great love for the family cabin on Lake Superior. I am sorry he is gone now, but I am glad he has found the ultimate answer his creative and spiritual mind craved. My heart goes out to my cousins, Margaret and Crissi.
